The golden rule is that the lead must be able to eject before the swivel comes out of the clip. If the swivel comes out first, the sinker will never eject. Your line will behave as it does on sliding rigs, the sinker will get stuck in the obstructions, and so will the fish.
In our opinion, the lead clip is the best way to ensure that a fish doesn't drag a lead behind it, since the lead will eject first. Used properly, the lead will always eject when you want it to!
